Friends of Africa International’s Pokot Project began in 2010 as a filmmaking and photography expedition with National Geographic filmmaker Kire Godal and National Geographic photographers Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher. In exchange for gaining access to film sacred ceremonies of Pokot tribe, Kire Godal pledged to bring the Pokot people a school to replace guns with books and bring peace to a troubled region. Immediately after filming, Godal contacted Friends of Africa International Founder and Chairman, Bonnie Bishop.  A month later, they returned to assess the area together and finalize the contract with Pokot Chief Yatta and the district commissioner to build the first-ever Pokot school. On March 28, the Pokot school was complete, and today it is attended by 150 Pokot children.

Fisher and Beckwith serve on Friends of Africa International Board and Godal serves on the Nairobi chapter Board of Directors.
